Ryan {head shots}

Ryan is an aspiring actor that was needing some new head shots for his portfolio. We decided to go to downtown San Diego to achieve more modern portraits that would truly show his style. It’s always exciting to work with a client that makes my job so easy. Ryan has a great look, and all the pictures turned out amazing. I love doing shoots downtown. There are so many textures and colors to work with you can get a different emotion on every corner. It was a cold and gray day, but we had a lot of fun exploring East Village. I have no doubt that there are great things in Ryan’s future, and I can’t wait to see him up on the big screen. Here are some of my favorite shots from the day.

What To Wear {formal}

Here’s another idea for a modern family portrait shoot. One thing I suggest is to find one outfit with a lot of color and pattern, and to pull colors from that. This makes is a lot easier to put a lot of different outfits together but still ensure they match well. This group of outfits would look great for a formal family portrait shoot, maybe in Seaport Village or in Balboa Park.

What to Wear {family portraits}

There has not been a single shoot that I have done without the question “What should we wear?” , and I always give the same response – wear what you’re comfortable in and what shows your style! There’s nothing worse than a group of people all different ages lined up in the same white shirt and denim bottom – BORING!! White or black shirts paired with khakis or jeans was once a popular portrait look. It should now be avoided. Your images will look dated and unnatural—unless your entire family routinely dresses like this. This trend is making a quick exit. In order to get modern family portraits that show the personalities of all your family members you need to be unique. This is not to say that there shouldn’t be an intentional color palette. Choose colors and styles that are complimentary and are true to your individuality as a family.

Try to stay away from anything with writing or recognizable imagery. Keep it simple. Use one or two patterns, such as floral and stripes, and build off of those to get your color palette. Below is an example of a great blend of fall colors that would be perfect for a shoot at the park.

I hope this gets you thinking about what clothing and style would best represent your family. Remember – keep it fun!

Jennifer + Jimmy {engagement portraits}

Jennifer and Jimmy are such a great couple and we had a blast doing their engagement portraits. We started off in Little Italy in front of one of my favorite places, Architectural Salvage. Walking around Little Italy, I was reminded why this is one of my favorite places to shoot portraits. There are so many colorful nooks and storefronts to play with. The inspiration is endless. We ended their shoot at Windansea Beach in La Jolla. Always a beautiful backdrop, we got some amazing portraits while the sun was setting. Here are some of my favorites from the shoot.

Sydney {beach}

I finally got to do pictures in my hood – Ocean Beach! Sydney is the most darling little girl and she definitely gave me a workout chasing her around. The day was gray and our first location on Fiesta Island was a bust, but Sydney’s mom, Lisa, was a trooper and we quickly moved on to Ocean Beach for some great portraits by the pier. I always jump at the chance to do something different and this shoot was unique and fun and showed Sydney’s shy/funny/darling personality! Can’t wait until the next shoot!

Lucas + Molly {anniversary}

Lucas and Molly have were in town celebrating their wedding anniversary and wanted to get some pictures done at the Hotel Del Coronado where they were staying. They are such a gorgeous couple and were super fun to work with. Molly has the most amazing eyes and I quickly became obsessed with her “serious face”. They are so in love and it was easy to capture their energy on camera. We did some great modern and unique portraits on the beach. Enjoy!

Spragins Family {balboa park}

I love doing portrait sessions at Balboa Park and it’s so much more fun when it’s with the Spragins family. They are such a cute family and they have the most adorable kids! We had a great time walking around the park. The backdrops are endless. It one of my favorite places to shoot because we can just relax and have a good time. The kids were climbing trees and benches and had a great time even picking out some of the places that they wanted to do the pictures. We got some great images and had a fun time doing it!

Kait + Peter {engagement}

Kait and Peter were visiting town from Texas and wanted to do a fun engagement portrait session while they were here. They love San Diego and wanted to do pictures with some urban shots and beach photos. La Jolla Village turned out to be the perfect location that offered both in a close setting. We had so much fun strolling around the shopping area. After we did some fun city style portraits, we headed down to WindanSea Beach. It was such a beautiful sunset. This is one of my favorite beach locations in San Diego. There They are such a great couple and we had lots of laughs while making sure that they both felt comfortable in front of the camera. It was so easy to get natural shots of the both of them to capture the photojournalistic style that I love.
